The Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) is situated on the Campus for Ageing and Vitality, Newcastle General Hospital site. Directed by Professor David Burn, the unit is linked to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) Centre and adjacent to the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) facility.
The primary aim of CARU is to facilitate the development of early assessment and intervention strategies targeted at age associated degenerative conditions. It is staffed by a team of experienced and well qualified research nurses and research professionals who are able to provide support with phase II-IV clinical trials and research studies in the older patient.
As well as a fully equipped general clinical area the unit also comprises of a Human Movement Laboratory equipped with 3D motion capture system incorporating an instrumented walkway(Gaitrite), a custom built state of the art Visual Perception Laboratory, a Bone Mineral Density (DEXA) scanner and a fully equipped laboratory for sample processing and storage.
